Schloss Lauenau

Schloss Lauenau stands on a former island in the Landkreis Schaumburg, built in the 16th century over the ruins of a 12th-century water fortress. The castle was constructed in the Weser Renaissance style, with four wings arranged around a 21 by 18-metre courtyard. Only the northern and western moats still hold water today, while the rest have been filled in. The west wing once housed living quarters with a vaulted cellar, and the east wing contained a grand hall. The castle’s foundations rest on oak piles, which required side supports in 1727 due to structural strain. The site has witnessed turbulent history, beginning with its construction by Duke Henry the Lion around 1190 as a border stronghold against the Schaumburg counts. After changing hands repeatedly, it was destroyed in 1519 during the Hildesheimer Stiftsfehde. Rebuilt as a Renaissance palace in 1572, it later served as a prison for Princess Sophie Dorothee in 1694–95 during her divorce scandal. The castle remained an administrative centre until 1852, then passed into Prussian state hands before falling into disrepair in the 20th century. Today the castle is privately owned and partly rented out, with ongoing restoration by the Brenneisen family. Visitors see the remaining moats, the brick and timber-framed façades of the west and east wings, and the sturdy supports added in the 18th century. The outer courtyard still contains remnants of the former economic buildings, while the inner courtyard offers a quiet space framed by the surviving wings. The castle’s layered past—medieval fortress, Renaissance palace, and later farm estate—remains visible in its architecture and setting.
