Holy Trinity Church
Holy Trinity Church stands in the quiet village of Casterton in Cumbria’s rolling countryside. Built between 1831 and 1833, it was founded by Rev William Carus Wilson, who also started the school attended by the Brontë sisters. The church is listed at Grade II, placing it among England’s nationally important buildings. Its exterior mixes limestone and sandstone, with a six-bay nave, a south porch and a west tower partly forming a baptistry. The tower has diagonal buttresses and plain parapets, while the chancel roof rises higher than the nave. Inside, the nave has a scissor truss roof and the chancel a collar rafter roof. The octagonal font stands on clustered shafts, and memorials include one to the church’s founder. The reredos was designed in 1897 by Austin and Paley, and the stained glass in the baptistry dates from 1884 by Shrigley and Hunt. Between 1893 and 1899 Henry Holiday created wall paintings and stained glass in the chancel, while James Clark painted the nave between 1905 and 1912. The two-manual organ was installed in 1893 by J. W. Walker, and the tower holds six bells from Whitechapel. Visitors find a calm interior filled with memorials, painted glass and carved woodwork. The tower’s six bells include three from 1845 and three from 1905, now used for chiming. The chancel’s three stepped lancets and the nave’s alternating lancets and buttresses frame the light inside. The east gable ends in a cross, and the south door leads from the porch into the nave. The contrast between the lower nave and the taller chancel draws the eye upward. The church remains an active parish, united with five nearby benefices.
