Stirnberg
The Stirnberg stands on the border between Bavaria and Hesse in the Rhön range, a low mountain area shared by three German states. Its summit reaches 902 metres above sea level, just 100 metres south-east of the Hesse border. The Heidelstein, 926 metres high, rises to the south-west, while the Querenberg lies to the north-north-east. The Hochrhön road cuts across the eastern flank, passing through the Lange Rhön nature reserve. The mountain marks the divide between the Rhine and Weser river systems. Streams flowing east reach the Main and then the Rhine, while those heading west travel via the Ulster and Werra to the Weser. Long-distance trails such as the E3 and E6 cross the summit, and the Rhön-Rennsteig route links the Red Moor with the Black Moor along this stretch. Visitors find open slopes below the wooded summit that offer wide views. From the western clearing at the top, the Wasserkuppe appears in the distance. In winter a prepared ski trail connects the Red Moor loop with the Black Moor loop across the eastern flank.
