Mullach na Dheiragain

Mullach na Dheiragain is a remote Munro standing at 982 metres in the Highland council area. It lies in wild, empty country between Glen Affric and Loch Mullardoch, about thirty kilometres from Kyle of Lochalsh and a similar distance from Cannich. The mountain’s Gaelic name means ‘hill of the kestrel’, and its summit is marked by a cairn. The peak is rarely climbed because it stands far from roads and tracks. Most people who reach the top do so as part of a longer walk on the nearby Sgùrr nan Ceathreamhnan. The usual start is Alltbeithe youth hostel in Glen Affric, which can only be reached on foot or by mountain bike. From the hostel walkers follow paths up the northern slopes to the main ridge and then follow the narrow crest to the summit. From the top the eye travels over steep corries on the east side and a continuous drop on the west into Gleann Sithidh. The ridge continues north-east past several smaller tops and ends high above the western end of Loch Mullardoch. A short spur also leads east from the summit into Gleann a’ Choilich. The whole ridge is rugged and quiet, with no buildings or paths other than those made by walkers.
