Morville Priory

Morville Priory was a small Benedictine monastery in Shropshire, once a cell of Shrewsbury Abbey. Today it stands near Morville Hall, a National Trust property on the road between Bridgnorth and Much Wenlock. The priory occupied a site linked to the parish church, just east of the hall. In the Domesday Book it appears as ‘Membrefelde’, the main settlement of its hundred with more than twenty households. Unlike Shrewsbury Abbey, which lay in the Diocese of Coventry and Lichfield, Morville belonged to the Diocese of Hereford and still does. The priory began as a collegiate church served by eight canons under Edward the Confessor. After the Norman Conquest, Roger de Montgomery granted the church to Shrewsbury Abbey between 1083 and 1087. The abbey gradually took over the prebends and rebuilt the church in 1118 under Bishop Geoffrey de Clive. In 1138 it became a priory, with a small colony of monks sent from Shrewsbury to maintain hospitality for the Bishop of Hereford. Records show the bishop’s visit in 1290 with thirty-five horses and a household that consumed poultry and pork. Visitors today find the parish church still standing where the priory once stood. Morville Hall, owned by the National Trust, dominates the hamlet and overlooks the site. The quiet lanes between Bridgnorth and Much Wenlock lead past old farmsteads that once supported the priory’s small income. The landscape remains gentle, with fields and woodlands recalling the priory’s modest estate. The church itself preserves traces of its medieval dedication to St Gregory, while the hall’s grounds include remnants of the monastic era. The place offers a quiet glimpse into a priory that once hosted bishops and abbots across centuries.
