St Michael and All Angels' Church, Welshampton

St Michael and All Angels’ Church stands in the quiet village of Welshampton in Shropshire. Built in the 1860s, it replaced an earlier medieval church and a smaller 18th-century building. The architect was George Gilbert Scott, who designed a yellow sandstone ashlar church with a slate roof. The roof shows lozenge patterns over the nave and zig-zag patterns over the chancel. A semicircular apse marks the chancel end, and buttresses support the walls at key points. A small bellcote rises where nave and chancel meet. The church is worth visiting for its links with Lesotho. Jeremiah Libopuoa Moshueshue, a prince from Lesotho, is buried in the churchyard. He came to England to train as an Anglican priest and died in Welshampton in 1863. His grave reflects a historic connection begun when a local vicar declined a post in Lesotho but kept ties with the country. In 2010 Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso of Lesotho visited the church and attended a service there. Inside, the church has lancet windows and stained glass. The west window commemorates Charles Kynaston Mainwaring, while the north-west window honours Jeremiah Libopuoa. The graveyard holds the simple stone marking the African prince’s resting place. The building’s clean lines and careful stonework give a calm, dignified atmosphere. Visitors find a place of quiet reflection and a small but significant piece of Anglo-Lesotho history.
