Burg Urhausen

The Burg Urhausen stands on a spur of the Erlenbach valley in the southern part of Schöntal’s Aschhausen district. It was built on the lower section of a right meander spur at about 245 metres above sea level where the village of Urhausen once lay. The site overlooks the winding stream below and the surrounding farmland. The castle first appears in records in 1228 when the lords of Boxberg held it. From 1308 to 1505 the family named Urhausen became its owners. By 1434 the structure had been reduced to a Burgstall, a medieval ruin, and passed to the lords of Aschhausen. Today only grassy mounds mark where walls once rose beside the stream. A footpath follows the old meander and leads past the quiet fields that now cover the site. Visitors can walk the gentle slopes and see how the valley’s shape guided the castle’s position centuries ago.
