St. Prokop-Kirche (Hamburg-Stellingen)
The Church of St Procopius stands in Hamburg-Stellingen, a quiet district in the city’s west. Built between 1961 and 1965, it follows the old Russian style seen in Novgorod long ago. A square plan with a single apse points east, while five blue onion domes rise above the walls. Inside, frescoes by Baron Nikolaj von Meyendorff cover every surface in bright colours. The church replaced an earlier chapel in Harvestehude that had served the Russian merchants of the early 1900s. The building matters because it became the seat of a bishop after Archbishop Filofej moved there in 1953. After the Second World War many Orthodox refugees settled in Hamburg, so the British authorities gave the community land near the Mittelweg. When that site was needed for a school, the parish received a new plot in Stellingen where the present church now stands. The 1968 video for Wonderland’s hit Moscow was filmed on the pavement outside, making the domes a pop-culture landmark. Visitors enter through a small porch on the west side and step into a single, lofty nave. Frescoes cover every inch of wall and ceiling, showing saints and scenes from scripture. Nine bronze bells, cast in Russia in the 1990s, ring from a metal frame beside the church. The five onion domes shine blue against the Hamburg sky, and the quiet street corner feels far from the city’s noise.
