Söhrewald transmitter

The Sendeturm Söhrewald is a former television transmission tower standing between the villages of Wellerode and Eschenstruth, south-east of Kassel. Built in 1962–63, it is 148 metres tall and belongs to the rare Type D design, of which only five were ever constructed. The upper section was removed in 2006, leaving a truncated concrete shaft. From 1963 until 1986 it carried ZDF and Hessen 3 for northern Hesse. After newer towers took over, its frequencies passed to RTL Television and Sat.1. The site now relays digital television using DVB-T2 HD. Since November 2017 it broadcasts ARD’s hr-Mux, ZDF and the commercial freenet TV package in Full HD. All encrypted channels are available only via the freenet TV platform. The transmitter operates in a single-frequency network with other local sites to cover Kassel and surroundings. Visitors reach the base along quiet country roads through fields and woodland. The tower’s massive concrete base and stub of the former mast stand on a small fenced plot. From the edge of the enclosure there are long views across the Kassel basin toward the Habichtswald hills. The surrounding countryside is calm, with scattered farms and patches of beech forest.
