St Joseph's Church, Brighton

St Joseph’s Church stands on the steep slope of Elm Grove in Brighton, a Roman Catholic building of stone whose tall nave rises above the surrounding houses. The site once held a temporary mission chapel completed in 1869, and the present church grew in stages from 1879 to 1906 under several architects. Matthew Haddock’s widow gave £10,000 to start the sanctuary, and J.S. Hansom finished the east end with polygonal apses. Frederick Walters added the west front in 1901, though the planned tower was never built. By 1906 the whole church was in use, and minor changes followed in the 1970s. English Heritage granted it Grade II* listing in 1985 for its architectural importance. The church mixes Kentish Ragstone with Bath Stone dressings and has three five-sided apses at the east end. Inside, a vaulted roof and pale brick shafts rise above narrow aisles on both sides of the nave. A richly carved chancel arch separates the seven-bay chancel from the main space, and trefoil windows light the chapels. The west porch shelters the entrance beneath a gabled roof, while the chancel arch frames the sanctuary. Over the decades the interior has seen small reorderings, including a Lourdes-style grotto chapel in the 1970s. Visitors find a quiet place of worship set against the hillside, its stone walls and tall proportions giving a sense of height. The nave’s low aisles allow light to reach the central space, and the trefoil windows cast coloured patterns on the floor. The three apses at the east end create a rhythm of projecting forms, each with its own window. The west front’s gabled porch marks the main entrance, and inside the chancel arch draws the eye forward. Elm Grove’s steep slope means the church stands above the street, offering views across Brighton from the surrounding area.
