City Observatory

The City Observatory stands on Calton Hill in Edinburgh, a prominent hill in the city centre. The oldest part is the Gothic Tower, also called Observatory House, designed by James Craig in the late 18th century. A boundary wall encloses the site, with a monument to John Playfair in one corner. The central Playfair Building, designed by William Henry Playfair, resembles a Greek temple and houses telescopes in its domes. The largest dome, the City Dome, once held a 22-inch refractor before being repurposed. The observatory has a long scientific history tied to Edinburgh’s astronomical heritage. Thomas Short established the first public observatory here in 1776, later expanded by the Edinburgh Astronomical Institution. Notable figures like Thomas Henderson and Charles Piazzi Smyth worked here as Astronomers Royal for Scotland. The site also played a key role in timekeeping, with signals sent to Nelson’s Monument and Edinburgh Castle for navigation. Today, the restored observatory is home to Collective, a centre for contemporary art. Visitors find galleries in the Playfair Building and the City Dome, with views over Edinburgh’s skyline. The Gothic Tower and surrounding walls remain, offering a glimpse into the site’s past. The hill itself provides panoramic views of the city and beyond.
