Town Hall Theatre

West Hartlepool Town Hall stands in Raby Road, Hartlepool, County Durham. It is a Grade II listed building designed in the English Gothic style. The site was open land west of Hart Lane when chosen in the late 19th century. Construction began after a foundation stone was laid by Councillor George Pyman on 18 December 1895. Henry Cheers, the architect, created a symmetrical frontage with turrets and a projecting arched porch. Inside, the main feature was a large assembly hall with a proscenium arch. The town hall became the centre for public gatherings soon after its opening on 1 October 1897. A pipe organ by James Jepson Binns was installed in 1926. Kathleen Ferrier, the celebrated contralto, performed Handel’s Messiah there on 15 December 1948. By the 1970s the technical school next door had been demolished and the hall converted into a theatre. Refurbishment in 1994 completed the transformation into the Town Hall Theatre. Visitors find a theatre with seating for 404 in the former assembly hall. The Gothic details remain visible on the exterior. The interior still shows traces of its earlier life as a concert venue. Performances continue in a space once filled by Kathleen Ferrier’s voice. The building links Hartlepool’s industrial past with its present cultural life.
