Traunviertel

The Traunviertel lies in Upper Austria, one of the country’s four traditional quarters. Its name comes from the Traun river which winds through the land. The region stretches from the Danube at Linz down to the foothills of the Alps. Linz-Land, Steyr-Land and Kirchdorf districts sit inland, while Gmunden and Steyr sit closer to the Salzkammergut lakes. The quarter also includes the state capital, Linz, which sits on the river’s banks. The Traunviertel is known for its mix of industry and scenery. Linz, the quarter’s largest town, is Upper Austria’s capital and a centre for technology and culture. Gmunden, on the Traunsee lake, is famous for its lakeside villas and the nearby Grünberg mountain. Steyr, where the Enns and Steyr rivers meet, has a well-preserved medieval old town with colourful houses. Visitors find a landscape of rolling hills, deep valleys and clear lakes. The Traun river carves a green corridor through the countryside, lined with cycle paths and walking trails. Lake Traunsee and Lake Alm offer swimming, boating and lakeside walks. In Gmunden, the Seilbahn up the Grünberg gives wide views over the Salzkammergut. Steyr’s old town, with its arcaded squares and riverside walks, shows the quarter’s historic side.
