St Michael and All Angels Church, Brownsover

St Michael and All Angels Church stands in Brownsover, now a Rugby suburb, on land once part of Clifton-upon-Dunsmore parish. The building began in the 13th century as a small chapel and grew through later centuries with new windows and buttresses. In 1876 Sir George Gilbert Scott almost rebuilt it for Allesley Boughton-Leigh of Brownsover Hall, keeping the earlier character. The church is Grade II* listed and cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust after becoming redundant in 1987. Cream stone walls and reddish-brown dressings frame a simple nave and chancel under a tiled roof. A brick extension sits at the northeast corner, and the west end shows diagonal buttresses and a pointed doorway topped by a small bell bracket. Inside, whitewashed plaster and 19th-century polychrome tiles cover the floor. A 13th-century circular font and a 15th-century wooden screen remain from earlier times. The east window holds 20th-century stained glass for Lawrence Sheriff, founder of Rugby School, while the organ case, made in 1660 for St John’s College, Cambridge, adds a decorated German presence. Plain glass fills the other windows, keeping the interior calm and uncluttered.
