St. Maria-Magdalena
St Maria-Magdalena stands on a raised mound beside the Elbe dike in Hamburg’s Moorburg quarter. The present building replaced at least two earlier churches, the oldest remains dating from 1223. A chapel dedicated to Mary Magdalene was built in 1309 by the local lords Willikin and Arnold of Stade. The church once housed a revered image that drew pilgrims until the Reformation. Archaeologists uncovered more than 400 medieval graves when they examined the old churchyard. The current whitewashed timber structure was consecrated in 1597 and enlarged in the 17th century by Lorenz Dohmsen. The church’s interior preserves a unified Baroque appearance shaped by later restorations. Valentin Preuß crafted the altarpiece in 1688, its twisted columns and gilded figures telling the Passion story. Christopher Sorgel painted the central panels while Christian Ludewig’s silver candlesticks date from 1744. The octagonal font with its three cherub supports also comes from Preuß’s workshop. Seven painted portraits of pastors line the walls, the oldest showing Werner Meyer from the 16th century. The organ, built in 1881, was enlarged in 1996 and still plays on mechanical wind chests. Outside, the churchyard contains historic gravestones and a classical memorial. A flood mark on the porch records the 1962 storm surge that filled the nave to a metre. The surrounding Elbe marshes stretch towards Wilhelmsburg, offering quiet walks past dykes and water meadows. Inside, the ceiling is painted as a starry night sky above the altar. The Braut door with its carved crowns and the separated pulpit and altar complete the calm, symmetrical space.
