Scottish Dark Sky Observatory

The Scottish Dark Sky Observatory stands on a hilltop near Dalmellington in East Ayrshire. It overlooks the northern edge of the Galloway Forest’s Dark Sky Park, where light pollution is unusually low. The site lies within the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere, a protected area recognised for its natural and cultural value. The observatory was designed by Glasgow Architects G.D. Lodge and opened in 2012 by the then First Minister Alex Salmond. In 2017 a planetarium was added by Beecher Architect and opened by the Lord Lieutenant John Duncan. The observatory aimed to introduce people of all ages and abilities to astronomy and space. It became a valued educational resource for the region, offering year-round access to the night sky. A serious fire in June 2021 destroyed the building, and an independent study later decided against rebuilding on the same site. Instead, the trustees bought an old visitor centre at Clatteringshaws Loch for a new observatory. The Astronomer Royal for Scotland, Professor Catherine Heymans, will serve as patron of the rebuilt facility. Visitors to the new site will find two observing domes for telescopes and a planetarium for shows about the stars. A small gift shop and café will provide refreshments and souvenirs. The location beside Clatteringshaws Loch offers calm surroundings and wide views of the sky. The project is expected to restore the observatory’s role as a leading place to learn about astronomy in southern Scotland.
