Schloss Liebenau

Schloss Liebenau is a Baroque manor house in the small Hessian town of Liebenau, near Kassel. It stands in Burggasse on the site of a former moated castle. The present building replaced a medieval fortress built before 1293. The old castle passed through the hands of the Rabe von Pappenheim, Löwenstein-Westerburg and Spiegel von Desenberg families. In 1465 it was destroyed during the Hessen-Paderborn feud and never rebuilt. The manor house has a mansard roof and private owners. In the 19th century additional wings were added to the original structure. The site lost its military importance after the 16th century and became a farmstead. Traces of the old water defences remain beneath the later buildings. Visitors see a well-preserved Baroque manor with later additions. The house sits in a quiet lane lined with old walls. The surroundings include the small town’s modest streets and modest houses. The building itself is not open to the public, but its exterior and setting recall the town’s medieval past.
