Wray Castle

Wray Castle stands beside Windermere in the Lake District National Park, a Victorian neo-gothic house built in 1840 for a Liverpool surgeon. The estate passed through generations of the Dawson and Rawnsley families, including Hardwicke Rawnsley who helped found the National Trust. Beatrix Potter spent a summer there at sixteen and later bought land nearby, leaving thousands of acres to the Trust. The castle itself never belonged to her, though she remains closely linked to the estate. After 1929 the National Trust owned the property and used it variously as a youth hostel and a training college for Merchant Navy radio officers. Two ships once bore the castle’s name, one wrecked off Chile in 1924 and another torpedoed in 1941. The grounds remain open all year and contain specimen trees planted to reflect Picturesque ideals. Conifers such as Wellingtonia stand alongside ginkgo, weeping lime and beech varieties. A stolen sapling from the felled Sycamore Gap tree was taken from the grounds in 2026. The estate lies within the Lake District National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, though the grounds are not registered as a historic park or garden. A passenger boat from Ambleside and Brockhole visits during the season, linking the castle to the lake. The nearby church of Saint Margaret, built by the Dawsons, shares the castle’s Gothic Revival style and opens occasionally for Heritage Open Days. Visitors walk paths that lead to the shoreline of Windermere and among the mature trees. The castle’s exterior shows its neo-gothic details against the parkland backdrop. The church tower can be seen from the grounds, echoing the castle’s design. The open landscape offers views across the lake and the surrounding fells. The estate’s history is visible in the choice of trees and the Gothic Revival church.
