Pfarrkirche Sankt Katharina, Wielfresen

The Roman Catholic parish church of St Katherine stands in Wiel, a village in the market town of Wies in the Deutschlandsberg district of Styria. It belongs to the Diocese of Graz-Seckau and is protected as a listed building. The church is dedicated to St Katherine and was once a filial church of St Veit before becoming an independent parish in 1892. The church’s 15th-century Gothic choir survives, while the nave was completed in 1572. Its west tower has an open ground-floor arcade and a pointed spire. Inside, the choir has a ribbed vault with two keystones and a blocked east window. The nave, widened in the 18th century, has a flat ceiling with simple stucco ribs and a west gallery on round columns. The high altar dates from 1669 and features a painting by Felix Barazzutti. The 18th-century tabernacle and two side altars, brought from Wies, are also notable. The organ, built by Carl Billich in 1876, completes the furnishings. The church’s quiet setting and historic fabric offer a glimpse of rural Styrian church life across the centuries.
