Star of Caledonia

The Star of Caledonia is a planned sculpture near Gretna in Dumfries and Galloway, close to the Scotland–England border. Designed by Cecil Balmond and Charles Jencks, it will stand in a field opposite the Gretna Gateway Outlet Village. The land was first proposed by local businesses and landowner Alasdair Houston. Public art manager Jan Hogarth helped develop the idea. Meetings with academics, cultural thinkers and the community shaped the project over seven years. The sculpture aims to boost tourism and bring social and economic benefits to the area. About 84% of road visitors to Scotland pass near Gretna, making it a visible gateway. A competition called ‘The Great Unknown’ led to Balmond’s winning star-shaped design. The project has received mixed reactions, with support from author Ian Rankin and local businesses. Critics include some local artists and architectural firms. Research suggests it could attract 70,000 visitors a year and generate significant publicity and income. When built, the sculpture will be made of galvanised steel and illuminated at night. It will reference Scottish innovators, especially physicist James Clerk Maxwell. The star shape will relate to the surrounding hills, the Solway Firth and the nearby River Sark. Visitors will see it from the A74(M) motorway, turning the border crossing into a memorable experience. The design aims to be both visually striking and meaningful to the region.
