Pfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt, Engelhartszell
The parish church of Engelhartszell stands in the small town of Engelhartszell in Upper Austria. It is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and belongs to the Diocese of Linz. The church and its cemetery are protected as historic monuments. The building began as a church in 1194, and the current Gothic structure dates from 1459. In the 17th century the church was transformed into a Baroque style. The single-aisled nave has three bays and a vaulted ceiling, while the choir is narrower with three bays and a three-sided end. The tower on the south side of the choir has a distinctive onion dome. Inside, the high altar, side altars and pulpit date from the early 18th century. Visitors find late Gothic and Baroque art side by side. The late Gothic baptismal font and the figures of Mary and John from a 1500s crucifixion group stand in the west porch. The modern ceiling painting by Fritz Fröhlich shows nine choirs of angels and was added in 1956. A 1400s bell and gravestones from the 16th to 18th centuries add to the historic atmosphere. The organ, built in 2017 by Hendrik Ahrend, completes the interior.
