Barleylands Farm Museum

Barleylands Farm Museum stands in Barleylands, a village on the edge of Billericay in Essex. The site began as a working farm and grew into a place where families meet animals and take part in seasonal events. Easter, Halloween and Christmas bring themed parties with crafts, games and farm trails. Birthday parties are organised in a party barn or around the farmyard. Sports teams train on the showground pitches and local clubs use the facilities for matches.
The Essex Country Show once drew thousands to Barleylands every September. For thirty years it showed how rural life was lived in the 20th century. Visitors watched spinners, hurdle makers and blacksmiths at work. Rare skills such as coracle-making and clog-making were practised in front of crowds. Heavy horses pulled ploughs, sheep were sheared, and working dogs herded sheep in the ring. Steam engines lined the field, vintage tractors filled one avenue, and model boats sailed on the lake.
Today the farm park and craft village keep the spirit of the show alive. Small animal barns let children meet rabbits, guinea pigs and goats. A craft hall displays handmade hurdles, baskets and wooden toys. The showground pitches host football, cricket and rugby. Seasonal decorations turn the farmyard into a winter wonderland or a spooky trail. The site remains a place where families learn about the countryside and enjoy simple pleasures together.
