Orensberg

The Orensberg is a hill in the Palatinate Forest, near Frankweiler in Rhineland-Palatinate. It stands 581.2 metres above sea level and forms part of the Haardt range, which marks the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest. The summit features striking rock formations known as the Orensfels, and an ancient circular rampart designated as a cultural monument. Three streams flow nearby: the Dernbach to the west, the Queich to the south and the Hainbach to the east. The hill is surrounded by higher peaks such as the Roßberg and Teufelsberg. The hill has a long history. Once called the Urlesberg, it was a pasture hill in Old High German. Excavations led by Jochen Braselmann uncovered Early Middle Ages settlements, including flint arrowheads from the New Stone Age and pottery from the Early Middle Ages. The circular rampart, once thought to be Celtic, is now recognised as a Carolingian refuge castle from the 8th century. A feature called the Opferschale, a hollow in the rock, shows traces of human activity, possibly from the Celtic period. Visitors reach the summit via a signed path through dense forest. The plateau offers a wide view of the Palatinate Forest and the Upper Rhine Plain. Nearby are castles like Trifels, Anebos and Scharfenberg to the southwest, Scharfeneck Castle on the northern slope, Meistersel Castle behind the Roßberg, and Ramburg Castle to the northwest. The hill is popular with walkers, paragliders and mountain bikers, thanks to its views and well-marked routes.
