St Teilo's Church

St Teilo’s Church stands in the quiet Monmouthshire village of Llanarth. Built in the 15th century, it is a Grade II* listed building of sandstone rubble with Decorated style windows. The church once served as the parish church, but repairs grew too costly and it closed in 2013. Its tower was rebuilt in 1884–5 by Richard Creed after earlier work by John Prichard in 1847. Dedicated to Saint Teilo, a 6th-century Bishop of Llandaff, the church now belongs to the Village Alive Trust. The building is worth visiting for its historic monuments and architecture. Inside, a white marble obelisk remembers Elizabeth Jones, raised by her husband William Jones of Clytha Park. He also built Clytha Castle as a memorial folly nearby. The church’s interior shows funerary monuments and medieval craftsmanship. Its sandstone walls and Decorated windows remain largely unchanged since the 15th century. Visitors find a calm, reflective space with notable monuments. The white marble obelisk stands near the nave, a quiet tribute to Elizabeth Jones. Sandstone walls enclose the interior, while Decorated windows let in soft light. The tower, rebuilt in the 19th century, rises above the village rooftops. The churchyard and surrounding lanes offer peaceful walks in Monmouthshire’s countryside.
