Albinmüller Tower
The Albinmüller-Turm is an elegant steel-and-concrete observation tower standing in Magdeburg’s Rotehornpark on the Elbe island of Werder. It sits beside the Stadthalle and close to the riverbank, its slender shaft rising above the tree tops. The tower was designed by Albin Müller for the 1927 German Theatre Exhibition and belongs to the New Building movement of the 1920s. Its vertical form contrasts with the horizontal mass of the neighbouring Stadthalle, creating a modern city landmark. The tower’s reinforced-concrete shaft is about 45 metres tall and topped by a 15-metre glass-and-steel lantern once used as a café. Visitors can ride an elevator or climb 252 steps to the viewing platform. At night the lantern glows in changing colours, while vertical light slits run the full height of the shaft. A relief of the Magdeburger Jungfrau by Wilhelm Deffke crowns the south-west corner, echoing the city’s coat of arms. The surroundings include the landscaped parkland of the Elbe island and the broad river itself. A new entrance building with a café and exhibition rooms is planned at the tower’s base, adding facilities for visitors. The park’s paths lead past lawns and mature trees, offering views of the tower and the Stadthalle together.
