Nasir Mosque

The Nasir Mosque stands on Brougham Terrace in Hartlepool, County Durham. It is the first purpose-built mosque in the town, completed in 2005. The building followed a rise in local conversions to Islam, including that of the mosque’s imam, Tahir Selby. The mosque plays an active role in community events and offers services beyond its congregation. It belongs to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, whose head laid the cornerstone in 2004. The mosque’s construction was funded entirely by donations from local Muslims. The land cost £35,000, and the elder community group Majlis Ansarullah oversaw the project. At its inauguration on 11 November 2005, Mirza Masroor Ahmad led the ceremony. Hartlepool’s MP Iain Wright and the council’s chief executive Paul Walker attended. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association donated around £20,000 to local charities on opening day. Inside, the mosque has two prayer halls that together hold about 500 worshippers. It also contains a library, a kitchen, offices and guest rooms. The building has faced vandalism linked to far-right groups, including a racially motivated attack in 2011. Despite this, it remains a place of worship and community support in Hartlepool.
