Dunlop Castle

Dunlop Castle stands in East Ayrshire, about 4 kilometres north of Stewarton. It began as a 14th-century castle owned by the Dunlop family from the 13th century. By the 19th century only the name remained, for in 1833 a large Jacobean-style house called Dunlop House was built on the same site. The older place was also known locally as Hunthall. No plans or detailed records survive of the medieval castle. The castle’s only surviving physical trace is a stone dated 1599 that once hung above its doorway. This stone now sits in the newer house, inscribed with the words “O Lord let ever thy blessings remain within this house.” The property was described in old documents as “an ancient strong house fortified with a deep foussie [ditch] of water.” A local tradition links the origin of Dunlop cheese to the castle’s kitchens. Visitors today see the grand Jacobean mansion built in 1833. The 1599 inscribed stone is kept inside the house, a quiet reminder of the earlier stronghold. The surrounding landscape is gentle farmland, with no visible remains of the ditch or walls. The name Dunlop Castle still appears on maps, keeping the memory of the medieval fortress alive.
