Peatrig Hill

Peatrig Hill stands in the Moorfoot range, about fifteen kilometres south-east of Edinburgh. It belongs to the parish of Heriot in the Scottish Borders Council Area. The hill is surrounded by other Moorfoot summits such as Blackhope Scar and Rough Moss. Nearby places include Borthwick Hall, Dewar, Garvald and Glentress Forest. The Heriot Water and the Gala Water flow close by, while the Dewar Burn drains the slopes. The hill is worth the journey for walkers who want quiet upland paths. The Moorfoot range offers long views across the Lothians and the Borders. Heriot village lies at the foot of the hill, providing a starting point for routes. Glentress Forest to the north is known for its mountain-bike trails. The area also holds traces of early settlement and old estates like Borthwick Hall. On the hill itself there are open heather moor and gentle grassy slopes. The summit is marked by a small cairn. From the top, walkers can see the Pentland Hills and the Lammermuirs. The Heriot Water valley below shows patches of woodland and farmland. The contrast between the open hill and the sheltered glens makes the walk rewarding.
