Burgstall Hornberg
The Burgstall Hornberg stands on a hill above the Ohrn river in the town of Öhringen. It was once a medieval hilltop castle, now reduced to earthworks and ditches. The site overlooks the southern bank of the river where the Hornberg hamlet now sits. Local nobles once took their name from the castle before it fell into ruin. Its former farmyard later grew into the small settlement seen today. The remains include low ramparts and a surrounding ditch that trace the castle’s outline. These earthworks show where walls once stood and where a moat once cut off attackers. The site has no standing buildings, only the buried traces of its past. Archaeologists recognise it as a typical early medieval fortification. The book by Hansjürgen Brachmann describes similar sites across Central Europe. Visitors walk over grassy mounds that mark the castle’s outer defences. A path leads around the site, offering views over the river valley. The quiet surroundings contrast with the castle’s former military purpose. The hamlet below keeps the name Hornberg, linking the present to the past. The low walls and ditches are all that remain of a once important stronghold.
