Rittergut Buchholz

Schloss Buchholz stands in the village of Buchholz, part of Vierkirchen in the Görlitz district of Upper Lusatia. Built in the early 19th century as the main house of the Krischa estate, it replaced an earlier building destroyed by fire in 1693. The estate had belonged to the von Gersdorff family since 1563 before passing through several owners, including Rudolph Siegismund von Carlowitz in 1774 and Karl Friedrich von Hacke in 1805. Eduard Tillgner bought the property in 1906 and commissioned further alterations. After the Second World War the building was used by the local council and housed a kindergarten during the GDR era.
The present two-storey house has eleven window bays and a hipped roof, with three central bays forming a slight projection on both sides. The north façade is marked by pilasters and approached by a broad flight of steps. The family von Hacke had the current structure erected in 1806, while Tillgner’s remodelling in 1906 introduced new external features. The name Krischa was changed to Buchholz in 1936, and after 1945 the building passed into private hands once more.
Visitors today see a quiet country house set among mature trees, its symmetrical façade softened by climbing plants. Inside, the original layout has been adapted for modern living, but the external rhythm of windows and pilasters remains clear. The north entrance with its stone steps leads into a hallway that once served the estate offices. Beyond the house, the surrounding village of Buchholz offers gentle walks through farmland and along the banks of the Neisse river.
