Ständehausbrunnen

The Blätterbrunnen, also called the Ständehausbrunnen or Cimiotti-Brunnen, stands beside the Kröpcke in Hannover where Karmarschstraße meets Ständehausstraße. It was designed by Emil Cimiotti, a German sculptor associated with Informel art. The fountain was installed in 1976 after the U-Bahn works and redesign of Ständehausstraße were finished. In 2011 it was taken down for building work at the Kröpcke-Center and stored. It was then re-erected about 45 metres away from its original spot. Cimiotti repeated the leaf motif elsewhere. In 1980 he created a circular basin for the German Insurance Association in Riethorst. In 1986 he made a tall column for the Landeszentralbank at Baringstraße. These works show how the artist shaped metal into organic forms. Visitors find a broad circular basin with abstract bronze leaves rising from the water. The leaves catch light and move gently in the breeze. The surrounding pavement is wide, linking the Kröpcke’s busy cafés with the Ständehaus’s classical façades. The fountain’s position makes it a quiet pause in the city centre.
