Wolves Wood

Wolves Wood is an ancient woodland near Hadleigh in Suffolk. It has been continuously wooded since at least 1600, making it one of seven such sites in the county. Managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, the wood covers 38.4 hectares and lies six miles from Ipswich railway station. It sits on the A1071 Ipswich Road and forms part of the Hintlesham Woods biological Site of Special Scientific Interest. The wood is also recognised as a Grade I Nature Conservation Review site. The wood supports a rich variety of wildlife. Oak trees grow among twelve species of dragonfly and damselfly. Roe deer move quietly through the undergrowth while birds such as the Garden Warbler, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Marsh Tit, Nightingale and Sparrowhawk nest here. The site’s diversity reflects its long-standing ecological importance. A mile-long circular nature trail winds through the woodland, offering visitors a way to explore its quiet paths. Nearby, a small car park and a single Sheffield stand for cycles provide access, with the wood lying close to a Sustrans cycle route. The other six ancient woodlands in Suffolk include Bradfield Woods and Staverton Park-Butley, each with its own character.
