Burg Aschersleben
The Burg Aschersleben stands on the Wolfsberg hill in the southwest of Aschersleben. It was built in the 11th or 12th century on the site of an earlier refuge fort. The remains include a ruined tower and sections of the old walls. The tower ruin now serves as an enclosure for the zoo’s eagle owls. A small permanent display in the zoo’s animal-keeper house tells the story of the old castle. The city once used the tower as a lookout post. Visitors find the remains of the bergfried amid the zoo grounds. The hilltop offers views over the town and its later fortifications. The nearby Burgplatz marks where the Askanians’ main castle once stood, though nothing of it survives.
