Château de Juvigny

The château de Juvigny stands beside the lake of Grands Prés on the edge of Châlons-en-Champagne. Built between 1702 and 1705, it was designed by Robert de Cotte and supervised by the Reims architect Nicolas Petit. The main building is surrounded by water-filled moats and an 18-hectare park that once followed French symmetry before being softened into an English landscape. Formal gardens, an orangery, a dairy, a kitchen garden and a branchwork folly all form part of the estate. Several features are protected: the façades, roofs, moats and entrance bridge gained historic monument status in 1988, while the dairy, park, orangery, kitchen garden wall, folly, approach avenue and park bridge were added in 2010. The house itself is a fine example of early-18th-century architecture. Its classical façades show the restrained elegance favoured by French nobility of the period. Inside, the rooms remain largely unaltered, preserving original plasterwork and joinery. The main reception rooms open onto views of the moat and park, while the upper storeys once accommodated private apartments. The dairy wing, a separate building, still shows the tiled floors and drainage channels used for cheese-making. Guests can stay overnight in the converted guest rooms. Visitors walk through the park along broad gravel paths that lead past the folly and kitchen garden. The lake lies just beyond the western boundary, its banks planted with willows and alders. From the raised terrace beside the orangery there are long views across the water meadows to the distant hills. The park is open to the public during Heritage Open Days, when the house itself is also accessible. The combination of water, mature trees and classical architecture makes the estate a quiet retreat only a few kilometres from the city.
