Burg Wadendorf
Burg Wadendorf stands on a hill above the village of the same name in Upper Franconia. The Wiesent river flows nearby. It is a small medieval castle with a two-storey main building and a southern curtain wall. Two round towers rise from the wall. Traces of the old gatehouse remain. The castle first appears in a 15th-century deed when Bishop Anton of Bamberg allowed two brothers to convert their house into a castle. In the Peasants’ War of 1525 it was badly damaged and its owner received 2,060 gulden in compensation. After the Thirty Years’ War it was rebuilt, then sold several times in the 17th century. By the 18th century it belonged to the Egloffstein family, who held it until 1852. Major restoration took place between 1986 and 1990. Visitors walk past the gatehouse remains and along the southern wall. The two round towers frame the view of the courtyard and the main building. Inside the main block are two storeys of rooms. Beyond the walls the village roofs drop toward the river meadows. The hilltop site gives long views over the surrounding countryside.
