Tanzquartier Wien
The Tanzquartier Wien is a centre for contemporary dance and performance in the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna. It opened in 2001 alongside museums such as the MUMOK and the Leopold Museum. The building houses spaces dedicated to dance creation and presentation. The centre is Austria’s first venue focused solely on contemporary dance and performance. It presents changing programmes of guest performances and local productions. Daily training sessions and regular workshops support professional dancers and performers. A public theory and media centre with a library and media library is also part of the facility. The Tanzquartier Wien collaborates with similar institutions across Europe, including venues in Frankfurt, Rotterdam, Essen and Ghent. Inside the MuseumsQuartier, the Tanzquartier Wien uses different spaces for its work. These include the large Hall E+G and a studio complex with three studios. The centre’s leadership has changed over the years, with figures such as Sigrid Gareis, Walter Heun and Bettina Kogler guiding its artistic direction. From the 2025/26 season, Isabel Lewis and Rio Rutzinger will lead the organisation.
