St John's Church, Dukinfield

St John’s Church stands at the top of a small hill on Oxford Road in Dukinfield, Tameside. It is an active Anglican parish church designed by Edmund Sharpe, a Lancaster architect, and built between 1838 and 1840. The church was funded partly by a £2,599 grant from the Church Building Commission, with the rest of the £3,299 cost covered by the parish. It opened for worship in July 1841, after being consecrated by the Bishop of Chester, Rt Revd John Bird Sumner. The church provided seating for 1,234 people when it first opened, and fifty years later it was restored with only minor changes. The notable local figure Rayner Stephens is buried in the graveyard. The church is constructed from stone with a slate roof and follows a simple plan. It has a five-bay nave with north and south aisles, a short single-bay chancel, and a four-stage tower at the west end. The tower features a west door, a coped parapet, and pinnacles at the top, while the rest of the building is topped with a continuous coped parapet along its walls and gables. Inside, the church has galleries on three sides, supported by octagonal columns, and the nave arcades follow the same design. The organ is located in the west gallery. Visitors to the church will find a quiet, elevated spot with clear views over Dukinfield. The stone exterior and slate roof give the building a solid, traditional appearance. Inside, the octagonal columns and paired lancet windows create a sense of space and light. The west gallery houses the organ, and the graveyard holds the grave of Rayner Stephens. The church’s elevated position makes it a peaceful place to visit, with the surrounding area offering a gentle walk uphill to reach it.
