Twickenham Museum

The Twickenham Museum stands in a three-storey 18th-century building opposite St Mary’s parish church. It occupies a Grade II-listed site on The Embankment in Twickenham, within the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. The museum is run entirely by volunteers and supported by a registered charity founded in 1993. Its focus is the history of Teddington, Twickenham, Whitton and the Hamptons, areas once part of the Municipal Borough of Twickenham before boundary changes in 1965. Exhibits include archives, artefacts and local information gathered and displayed by the team. The museum has mounted special exhibitions and received funding to explore local stories. In 2014 it was awarded £9,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Then and Now programme. The grant supported a project on the 1914 Christmas truce and its link to a soldier named Frank Edwards. Edwards famously kicked a football during the Battle of Loos in 1915, an episode now part of the museum’s First World War displays. Visitors find a compact museum with displays on local history and rotating exhibitions. The building retains its original 18th-century features alongside modern displays. Artefacts and documents tell the story of the four communities over centuries. A small research area offers access to archives and historical information. The setting beside the church and riverside walk adds to the quiet charm of the visit.
