Hohenfelde lies along the Outer Alster in Hamburg-Nord, between St. Georg and Eilbek. Its name recalls the open field that once stood outside the city walls. The Mühlendamm once carried the main road across the Eilbek, and the Kuhmühle bridge still marks the spot where the only crossing existed before the Mundsburger Damm was raised.

The area’s history is shaped by defence walls, the Reformation and the great fire of 1842. A men’s bathing place opened in 1869, later joined by a women’s basin in 1901. In 1874 Hohenfelde was incorporated into Hamburg and rebuilt after wartime destruction. Today the Alsterschwimmhalle, opened in 1973, draws swimmers to its indoor pools.

Visitors walk the tree-lined streets where the U-Bahn lines U1, U3 and S1 stop at Lübecker Straße, Uhlandstraße and Landwehr. The Marienkrankenhaus and the former hospital lands recall the quarter’s charitable past. Along the Alsterufer the broad promenade offers views of the water and the city beyond.
