St John the Evangelist RC Church

St John the Evangelist RC Church stands in the Portobello district of Edinburgh, near the junction of Brighton Place and Sandford Gardens. The church belongs to the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh and serves as a Catholic parish. A primary school, St John’s RC Primary School, sits on Duddingston Road and shares the parish’s name. Since 2017 the church has been part of Cluster 2, which also includes St Mary Magdalene and St Teresa of Lisieux. Three parishes work together to share resources and organise activities. The building was finished in 1906 and designed by the architect JT Walford. Its organ was rebuilt by Rushworth and Dreaper after being moved from Hawick in 1961. The church is recognised as a Category A listed building, marking its national importance. The interior reflects the early 20th-century style chosen by Walford. The organ remains a notable feature of the worship space. Inside, visitors find a well-preserved church interior with high ceilings and stained glass. The organ occupies a prominent position near the altar. The walls display traditional Catholic iconography and symbols. The building’s stonework and detailing show the craftsmanship of its era. The school next door adds a sense of community life to the area.
