Mörburg

The Mörburg was a medieval water castle near Höfen in Schutterwald, Ortenaukreis. Built in the early 12th century by the Lords of Geroldseck, it appears in records from 1129 and was later held by the Lords of Böcklin and the Lords of Nassau-Saarwerden. The Thirty Years’ War left it in ruins, and in 1882 the remaining mound was levelled, leaving no trace of the original structure. Historians Kurt Klein and Hugo Schneider have described the site in regional studies, noting its role among the vanished castles of the Ortenau. Their work shows how the Mörburg fits into the wider pattern of medieval fortifications along the Upper Rhine. The site is now little more than a flat field, yet it still points to the power struggles of the 12th and 17th centuries. Visitors walk across the former island site where the castle once stood. The surrounding fields and the nearby Schutter valley offer quiet views of the kind of landscape the builders chose for defence. There are no ruins to explore, but the place quietly recalls a vanished fortress and the families who once ruled from its walls.
