Brockwell Park

Brockwell Park is a 50.8-hectare green space in south London, south of Brixton and straddling Herne Hill and Tulse Hill. It sits on rising ground with long views across the city to Central London. The park’s highest point is topped by Brockwell Hall, a grand 19th-century mansion built for glass merchant John Blades. Mature oaks and sweeping lawns stretch across the slopes, while three duck ponds and a series of lakes add water to the landscape. The park is recognised as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation and holds Grade II listing on the National Heritage List for England. The park draws nearly four million visitors each year for its wide range of activities and events. Brockwell Lido, a Grade II-listed art deco open-air pool, is a focal point for swimmers and sunbathers. A miniature railway, tennis courts, a BMX track and a bowling green offer sport and play. The annual Lambeth Country Show brings tens of thousands to the park in summer, while past concerts have featured headline acts such as Elvis Costello, Madness and Paul Weller in front of crowds of up to 150,000. Visitors find a mix of heritage and recreation. The walled garden grows flowers and herbs, and a café inside Brockwell Hall serves drinks with hilltop views. A children’s paddling pool opens in summer, and a dog-free play area keeps younger visitors safe. Model village houses outside the walled garden recall the park’s links to an 18th-century agricultural past. Wooden sculptures, community greenhouses and cricket nets add further interest across the park’s varied terrain.
