Totenkapelle

The Totenkapelle stands at the southern entrance of Kuchl’s cemetery, close to the parish church. Built in 1790, it is a plain rectangular building with a low-pitched roof. A small porch with its own hipped roof shelters the entrance. Above the chapel rises a slender bell tower topped by a baroque double helmet. Four quatrefoil windows pierce the north and south walls, while plain rectangular windows light the long sides. The chapel’s interior is divided into two bays covered by a cross-ribbed vault adorned with baroque stucco mirrors. At the far end hangs a crucifix flanked by neo-Gothic figures of Saint Rupert and Saint Virgil. The space now serves as a mortuary chapel for laying out the deceased before burial. Visitors step into a quiet room where the vaulted ceiling and simple furnishings create a sombre atmosphere. The historic furnishings and the two saints’ statues remain in place, marking the chapel’s continuing use. Outside, the surrounding cemetery and nearby church tower frame the view.
