Franziskanerkloster Mosbach

The Franciscan monastery in Mosbach stands in the Neckar-Odenwald district of Baden-Württemberg. It was founded in 1686 after the Catholic elector allowed worship again in the region. The first friars came from Tauberbischofsheim and Miltenberg, living at first in a mill before their own buildings rose.

The monastery soon became a centre of care and learning. Friars ran schools, trained novices and gave help to the poor, feeding about fifty people daily. A hall church with three bells was built and finished in 1698, later receiving altars, an organ and a clock paid for by the elector. The site grew over the next century, adding wings and a novitiate where up to thirty men trained at a time.

Today the old monastery houses the district court and the local court. The former chapel serves as the main council chamber, and the novitiate is now the health office. Parts of the enclosing wall and a 17th-century fountain remain beside the main road. Behind the courts a reconstructed cloister garden recalls the friars’ quiet work.
