Cemetery chapel

The Catholic cemetery chapel in Affing stands in the Swabian countryside of Bavaria. Built in 1833, it was commissioned by the Freiherren von Gravenreuth as a private burial chapel for their family. The chapel was consecrated on 19 September 1833 by Bishop Ignaz Albert von Riegg of Augsburg. The single-aisled building follows the plans of architect Johann Michael Voit. Its barrel vault and semicircular apse give the interior a calm, classical feel. A small bell tower with a cross-topped finial rises from the roof, marking the chapel’s presence in the landscape. Inside, the apse niches hold the Gravenreuth family tombs. Portraits of Karl Ernst and Eleonore von Gravenreuth, sculpted by Johann Halbig in 1858, watch over the space. The chapel’s restrained design and careful craftsmanship make it a quiet place of memory.
