Pride Park Stadium

Pride Park Stadium stands on the edge of Derby’s city centre, within the Pride Park business district. Built in the late 1990s as part of a wider redevelopment, it replaced the Baseball Ground, Derby County’s home since 1895. The stadium seats 33,597 and is the 16th-largest football ground in England. Its design drew heavily on Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium, with a detached main stand and a continuous horseshoe around the other three sides. The pitch measures 105 metres by 68 metres, meeting international standards. The stadium has hosted major matches, including England’s games against Mexico in 2001 and Brazil against Ukraine in 2010. It also staged the 2009 FA Women’s Cup final and the 2025 Women’s League Cup Final. The Queen opened the ground in July 1997, the first time a British monarch had opened a new football stadium. The first competitive fixture ended in confusion when floodlights failed, but the problem was quickly resolved. By August 1997, the stadium hosted its first completed match, a 1–0 win over Barnsley. Visitors find a modern all-seater bowl with clear sightlines from every seat. The main stand faces the horseshoe, and the corners were completed later to raise capacity. A visitors’ centre once showed a computer-generated tour during construction, and fans could buy engraved bricks set into the stadium’s exterior. The pitch is surrounded by a three-metre grass margin, and the ground retains space for future expansion. Corporate interest helped fund the final build, leaving the stadium ready for both club and international football.
