Midland Railway War Memorial

The Midland Railway War Memorial stands in Derby, a town once dominated by the Midland Railway, the largest employer in the area. It is a First World War memorial designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and unveiled in 1921. The memorial commemorates the 2,833 Midland Railway employees who died while serving in the armed forces during the war. Around a third of the company’s workforce, some 23,000 men, left to fight, and their names are listed on bronze plaques attached to a screen wall. The memorial is positioned on Midland Road, close to Derby railway station and the Midland Hotel. The memorial is significant because it reflects the Midland Railway’s role in the war effort and the heavy losses suffered. The company repurposed carriages for hospital trains and manufactured weapons, while thousands of its employees joined the armed forces. The memorial’s design, with its recumbent effigy of an unknown soldier, was influenced by Lutyens’ work on the Cenotaph in London. The soldier’s elevated position and covered face give the memorial a sense of anonymity and universality, allowing visitors to connect with the loss personally. Visitors to the memorial find a 10-metre-high cenotaph of Portland stone, partially enclosed by a screen wall on three sides. The bronze plaques list the names of the fallen in alphabetical order, with no indication of rank or service branch. The screen wall forms alcoves on either side of the cenotaph, each supporting a flagpole at the ends. The memorial’s classical shapes and lack of overt religious symbolism create a solemn atmosphere. Its position near the railway station and hotel makes it a quiet but accessible place for reflection.
