rock formation on the Plenkerberg
The Plenkerberg rock formation stands in the Mühlviertel nature park near Rechberg in Upper Austria. It was registered as a natural monument in 1984 and rises on the highest point of the Plenkerberg at 706 metres. The site consists of coarse-grained Weinsberger granite blocks shaped by weathering into rounded forms. About 700 metres south-east of Rechberg village centre, the formation reaches up to eight metres in places. A wooden observation platform, the Karl-Weichselbaumer viewing tower, crowns the rocks without dominating the landscape. The granite blocks show characteristic woolsack weathering typical of this igneous rock. The tower’s design avoids disrupting the surrounding scenery, allowing views to blend with the natural setting. Both the natural monument and the viewing structure link into local walking trails that cross the area. The combination of geology and light timber construction creates a quiet spot for visitors to pause. The rounded shapes and open views invite close inspection of the stone forms. Walkers reach the site along paths that wind through the gentle hills of the Mühlviertel. From the tower’s platform the landscape stretches out in wide sweeps of fields and woodland. The contrast between the solid granite and the airy wooden tower frames the horizon clearly. Visitors find benches and information boards placed along the trails for resting and learning. The whole place offers a place to stand still and take in the quiet strength of the rocks and the openness of the sky.
