Thurnerhof

The Thurnerhof is a medieval residential tower in Langkampfen, Tirol. Built in the 14th century, it stands on the eastern edge of Unterlangkampfen village. The building’s size and design give it a turret-like appearance. Despite major changes in the 20th century, it kept this character until recent years. The tower’s cellar remains untouched and sparked archaeological digs by the University of Innsbruck. Archaeologists dated the tower’s start to about 1375. No owner or title is recorded before 1500. Experts believe a minor noble family built it as a show of status rather than a fortified home. Later, it may have become a simple residence. One theory links it to the Langkampfen ministerial family, but they vanished before the 14th century ended. Excavations in 1995 uncovered many small finds in the cellar. Pottery, tiles, bone, metal tools, glass and jewellery were recovered. A lead crucifix from the 19th century, shaped like a rosary pendant, was also found. Today, these items are displayed on the tower’s ground floor. The exposed foundations show how the building was constructed long ago.
