Church of St Peter
St Peter’s Church stands in the quiet village of Henley, east of Ipswich in the Gipping Valley. The building is an active Anglican parish church and belongs to the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. It is a Grade I listed structure, recognised for its historical importance. The church sits among the low Suffolk fields, its stone walls weathered by centuries of wind and rain. A small lane leads to the lychgate at the entrance, where visitors step from the everyday world into a place of worship and memory. The church’s fabric tells a story that begins in the 13th century. The south door survives from that early period, its ironwork worn smooth by generations of hands. A 19th-century parish room was added later, blending older stone with newer brick. Inside the tower hangs a ring of eight bells, cast between 1480 and 1902. In 1972 the frames were repaired and the bells rehung, and in 1976 a ninth bell was installed for the clock. Inside, the nave opens under a roof of dark timber. The font, plain and round, stands near the west door. The chancel arch frames the altar, its archway decorated with simple mouldings. Light falls through clear glass windows, illuminating worn flagstones and box pews. The tower stairs wind upward, past the ringing chamber where the bells still swing. From the belfry, the view stretches over the flat Suffolk landscape, churchyard yews silhouetted against the sky.
